Malaysia is an ideal starting point for anyone looking to dip their toe into Southeast Asia for the first time. The infrastructure is good, the distances between destinations are short, and the cosmopolitan capital of Kuala Lumpur counterbalances the simple pace of life in rural stilted villages.
It's also a real melting pot with Malay, Chinese and Indian influences reflected in the country's culture and food - I particularly like the way you can taste this blend of different culinary traditions in a single Malay dish.
Malaysia's history is also one of colonization – by the Dutch, the Portuguese and British, showcased by an array of architecture and heritage in a number of towns.
The region boasts primary rainforest, lush tea plantations in the central highlands, and – perhaps most tempting – pristine yet deserted stretches of coast.
While the beaches on the west coast are popular, the east coast has retained much of its original, rugged Malay charm and offers a quiet alternative.
